Stallion Match Ratings
About the Ratings
Like other pedigree rating systems, our aim at Stallion Match is to help users understand the potential of a pedigree. However, we've taken a unique approach by opting for bands over fluctuating ratings for clarity and stability. Our system includes three distinct bands:
- Perfect Match: This top tier shows that the pedigree has multiple stakes winners with at least a 65% match over five generations and features matching ancestors in each quarter of the pedigree when compared to the stakes winners.
- 20/20 Match: This signifies that the pedigree includes multiple stakes winners with at least a 65% match over five generations.
- Nothing/Blank: Indicates that the pedigree could be more proven, with minimal successes to its name.
This band system allows users to quickly gauge the pedigree's success and compatibility potential straightforwardly and consistently.
A horse's band is rarely downgraded; however, it can be upgraded as the pedigree experiences more stakes-winning success.
It's crucial to highlight that our algorithm considers EVERY ancestor within the first five generations, including both males and females. This comprehensive approach ensures a more accurate comparison between the pedigree of your search and our global list of stakes winners. By not limiting the analysis to a particular gender, we provide a fuller, more nuanced understanding of pedigree potential, offering a richer insight into the breeding and racing prospects.
The Perfect Match Facts
For your reference, achieving a "Perfect Match" rating within our system follows these simplified criteria for easier understanding:
- The pedigree must first qualify as a 20/20 Match, indicating multiple stakes winners share at least 65% of their pedigree over five generations with your search.
- Additionally, there must be at least two stakes winners with a matching ancestor in each quarter of the pedigree, aligning with your search.
This tiered approach ensures that a "Perfect Match" reflects significant pedigree compatibility based on a broad genetic match and highlights a detailed and specific lineage connection, offering a high degree of confidence in the breeding or purchasing decision.
- 24% of stakes winners have a Perfect Match Rating
- 3% of slow* horses have a Perfect Match Rating
- A Perfect Match pedigree has an 8 times better chance of becoming a stakes winner

The 20/20 Match Facts
To qualify as a "20/20 Match" under our criteria, the following conditions must be met:
1. The pedigree must include multiple stakes winners with a similarity score of 65% or more, indicating a close relation to your search.
2. The matching ancestors identified must be at most two generations apart.
3. While our search encompasses five generations for potential matches, due to the second criterion, the final matching ancestor we consider must be located within the fourth generation.
This specific set of criteria ensures that a "20/20 Match" represents a pedigree with a strong, closely related lineage to successful stakes winners, providing a meaningful indicator of potential racing or breeding success.
