Understanding the Spider Charts on Stallion Match

The Spider Charts are powerful visual tools that help breeders evaluate the type of stakes winners a mating is likely to produce, both in terms of age and racing distance. These charts appear on both hypothetical searches (e.g., when analysing a mating) and racehorse profile pages.

Where to Find the Spider Charts

You’ll find these charts on the Stallion Match Search Results page, after entering a hypothetical mating, as well as on any individual racehorse page on Stallion Match.

The Spider Charts after a Search

Age Chart – When Are Stakes Winners Peaking?

This radar chart shows the age at which stakes winners with similar pedigrees were successful. It includes categories for:

  • 2 Years
  • 3 Years
  • 4 Years
  • 5 Years
  • Open Age (older ages)

Each line colour represents a different sex:

  • 🩷 Pink for Female
  • 💙 Blue for Male

The number within each dot represents the number of stakes winners with a similar pedigree to your search.

How to Use It:

If you’re looking to breed a precocious 2YO sprinter, a cluster of female winners at “2 Years” is a strong signal. Alternatively, a rising pattern toward “4 Years” or “5 Years” might suit breeders aiming for later bloomers.

Distance Chart – How Far Do They Run?

This chart indicates preferred race distances of similarly bred stakes winners. The distance intervals are:

  • 800m (4f) – Pure speed
  • 1200m (6f) – Classic sprint
  • 1600m (8f) – Miler
  • 2000m (10f) – Middle distance
  • 2400m (12f) – Staying
  • 2800m+ (14f) – True staying type

How to Use It:

This is especially helpful when choosing between stallions. If your mare throws speed, look for matches where the distance chart shows a spike at 1200m or less. If you’re targeting classics or Cups, look for strength from 2000m upwards.

Breeder Tips: Interpreting the Spider Charts

  • Look for concentration and clarity – Charts with significant spikes in certain areas often indicate strong historical performance traits in that segment.
  • Cross-check male vs. female lines – Some matings show a clear advantage by sex. That might influence how you manage or retain a foal.
  • Use this for sales strategy too – Planning to sell a colt? Look for male trends in sprinting categories for marketability. Keeping a filly to race? You might prefer later-maturing profiles with broader distance aptitude.

Frequent

Q1: What do the colours represent in the Spider Charts?

🩷 Pink represents female stakes winners, while 💙 blue represents male stakes winners. This allows you to visually assess whether a mating is more likely to produce thriving colts or fillies across age and distance categories.

Q2: Why is the chart empty or showing low values?

This usually means very few or no stakes winners share a similar enough pedigree to the mating you’ve entered. You can try adjusting the stallion or mare to find more historically successful crosses.

Q3: How do these charts help with breeding decisions?

They give insight into when (age) and how far (distance) similar stakes winners have succeeded. Breeders can align their goals—like producing early 2YO winners or classic-distance horses—with the traits shown by the spider chart profiles.

Q4: Can I use the Spider Charts to compare stallions?

Yes! When comparing potential sires, these charts help highlight which ones are producing sprinters, stayers, or more versatile runners. Pair this with the Rating (Perfect Match & 20/20 Match) alerts for a fuller analysis.
